Scrolling through numerous art sources, auction houses and galleries’ sites feels like I am on-line dating - swiping left or right with potential and discarded choices. The only thing is, I am not looking for a date, I am asking the piece to move in with me. To live on my walls, join my family…and there are questions that need to be answered:
Will it play nice with my furniture? What will the art say about me? Can I afford this?
This latest search made me think of how our clients may go about selecting art for their homes. Here are a couple strategies to balance the choices between our hearts and minds:
BE MY EVERYTHING
Look for a piece that speaks to you. Let it be your everything. The furniture selections, color code and other room choices revolve around it…or not. Honesty, there is so much flexibility with art. It can stand up and out from the rest of the room. It can be the focus point. Think of your strappy, fuchsia stilettos with that all black dress. You know it looks fabulous because those shoes are EVERYTHING!
YOU COMPLETE ME
An art piece does not have to be the beginning and end of your world. For you, it’s way more important to be in love with the overall look and feel of your space. The art is just part of the bigger picture that you get to enjoy! It helps complete your space.
MORE THAN ENOUGH LOVE TO GO AROUND
You do not have to commit to only one piece or style. According to one of our team members (uh-hum Kristin), you can never have enough art or joy! Toss constraints out the window and go with all the pieces that strike your fancy. Kristin is happy to cheer you on (and organize) your way to a fabulous gallery wall.
INVEST IN YOUR FUTURE
Art and their artist is part of your portfolio. Art can be smart and beautiful. Again, you cannot go wrong with a piece…it can work in your space, your heart and your investment portfolio.
DATING OUT OF MY LEAGUE?
With that all being said, my number one issue is that I tend to date out of my league. My infatuation with an artist or two has left empty walls in my own home. I am unable to spend $75,000 for my dream art from my dream artist, so I am scrolling through alternatives. Some remind me of my love, others are in stark contrast, but all tickle my fancy in some way or another.
Keeping in mind the above strategies, I will keep scrolling and give my heart, my head and my walls the space to fall in love.
